Monogram
Latticework of Letters
|
What is a Monogram?
A monogram is a composition of letters as a sign for
a name.
The monograms, which I describe at this website, are latticeworks
of letters. The letters are initials of members of a family.

At the end of the middle ages artists and craftsmen
used monograms to protect their works against imitation, but also to express
their self-confidence and pride.
A popular monogram is Albrecht Dürer's signature.

Making of Monograms
top
Choose the initials of family members' names.
Draw the initials in tall and slender letters about 1
foot = 30 cm long.
Cut out the letters.
Interweave the letters, so that you can recognize them
all. The general picture has to look nice.
Draw the latticework of letters.
Decorate the letters and the spaces between the letters.

Kögler's Monograms

The art teacher and artist Waldemar Kögler (1906
to 1977) has developed this playing with letters into little works of art.
Many people who he knew have these pictures with their initials in their
home.
